Bile Salts

Bile salt is a sodium salt of the conjugate of any bile acid with either glycine or taurine. It is a cholanoid and an organic sodium salt. Bile salts are composed of four different kinds of free bile acids (cholic, deoxycholic, chenodeoxycholic, and lithocholic acids.

Applications

Cholic acid sodium salt is a bio-surfactant which can be used as a reducing reagent in aqueous solution. It is also used as a non-denaturing detergent used for extraction of membrane proteins. Sodium cholate hydrate has been used in a study to assess the effect of phospholipid formulation and surfactants on the dermal delivery of hydrophilic drugs from elastic liposomes. It has also been used in a study to investigate the elastic deformable vesicles, transfersomes, for transdermal drug delivery.
